Richard Carroll
Writer/Director/Exec
My work has spanned various genres and formats, from true crime to contemporary art, from short to feature length, from entertainment to education.
Works include “Rough Diamond”, a limited comedy drama series in development, (podcast in production - launching Spring ‘26),“7th&Hill”, a documentary set in downtown Los Angeles, (award winner at AmDocs from Oliver Stone), and “Imagineering”, an artwork for British artist Ryan Gander. Past collaborations have included renowned figures such as Al Gore, Johnny Depp, Denis O’Hare, and Holly Woodlawn. Works have been broadcast, screened, and exhibited on many platforms and at festivals worldwide: The Sundance Channel, Short Shorts Tokyo, Clermont Ferrand, and Tribeca.
I’ve directed and produced films for advertising, branded content, corporate and other formats for clients like Fox Sports, BBC, The Egyptian Government, GSK, Rolls Royce, The Refugee Council, Glenfiddich, Emirates, Cancer Research, British Airways, Sony PlayStation, Nissan and Audi; shooting on sets and on location worldwide, especially in the UK and Los Angeles, working with some of the best cinematographers in the industry and winning a few industry awards along the way.
Richard began in animation combining his own original photography and other layered graphic elements with typography creating a unique organic style. An early commission was to create the title sequence for the Cannes commended cult 16mm short film “Tunnel of Love” starring Eddie Kidd, Tamara Beckwith and Ed Tudor-pole, directed by Robert Milton-Wallace, commissioned by legendary music industry creative director and director Mike Ross, (designer of classic sleeves: Elton John’s Yellow Brick Road/Police’s Outlandos D’Amour/Joe Jackson’s Look Sharp among many others). Richard and Mike were subsequently asked to create conceptual work for UK ad agency HHCL’s pitch for ITV’s new on-screen broadcast identity - which they won. Title sequences and broadcast idents formed many commissions from broadcasters like MTV, Channel 4, BBC and Virgin Atlantic in-flight channels. Richard teamed up with talented designer Dom Bridges at this time, forming FELT, the creative animation studio based in Clerkenwell, London, work featuring in Typography Now, OneDotZero’s festivals and their coveted book Motion Blur, advertising bible Campaign, Graphics International and Creative Review. FELT were signed to direct commercials and music videos by the hotshot production company Tsunami, founded by industry legend and ex MD of Propaganda, Mark Andrews. Multiple commissions from ad agencies followed and FELT’s star rose rapidly. Now directing purely live action on 35mm film, a TV commercial for Nissan, “Sponsors” was awarded, much discussed in the national press, then banned after many complaints! This Creative Circle winning spot featured in the prestigious Shots New director's showcase at Cannes and in the US journals Boards and Print. FELT quickly gained commissions on both sides of the Atlantic and were soon represented by the HKM/Director’s Bureau satellite Public Works in LA, who’s group roster included fellow directors Mike Mills, Spike Jones, Roenberg, Sophia Coppola and Jo Kosinski. FELT directed multiple commercials for Fox sports, Playstation among others, shorts and also a long form music documentary for Martina Topley-Bird. In between the commercial work FELT wrote, shot and produced the 20 minute short,“Underdog”, (prequel to 7th&Hill), which sold to the Sundance Channel and aired in Italy, the US and Japan.
